CRP-18 · Corpus Christi Deepwater Ingress Gate
Low-profile hydraulic drop-gates installed 24 meters deep in the Corpus Christi Shipping Channel — completely invisible during normal operations, rising to seal the channel when surges threaten the port and the refineries behind it.
Pros
- Invisible infrastructure: zero impact on shipping, views, or daily port operations.
- Protects the Corpus Christi refining complex, a nationally significant energy node.
- Drop-gate mechanics are simpler than lift gates — gravity does half the work.
Cons
- 24-meter-deep hydraulic seals are at the edge of proven pressure-seal technology.
- Submerged gates can't be inspected visually; maintenance means diving the whole system.
- Siltation in the channel could jam the gates — the Gulf's sediment load is relentless.
Feasibility: The "invisible" pitch is attractive but the 24-meter depth is doing a lot of work in this proposal. Shallower drop-gates exist and work. Pushing to 24 meters for Super-Mega-Port compatibility adds risk without clear benefit — a shallower gate protecting the same shoreline would be cheaper and more reliable.
Aerial mock-up: Nothing visible on the water — only heavy operational towers on the banks betray the massive hydraulic gates resting 24 meters below.
