Golden Gate tidal sluice beneath the bridge
San Francisco, CA · $350B (proposal)

SFO-20 · Golden Gate Tidal Sluice and Lock System

A deep-water mechanical barrier suspended beneath the Golden Gate Bridge — 4.5 million tons of titanium-steel gates anchored in 18 million cubic meters of concrete, designed to seal San Francisco Bay against Pacific tidal anomalies up to 10 meters while surviving magnitude 9.5 earthquakes.

Pros
  • Protects the entire Bay Area — Silicon Valley, two major ports, and 7+ million people — with one structure.
  • Seismic isolation engineering at this scale has Japanese precedent in dam and bridge work.
  • Leaving the bridge visually untouched preserves an irreplaceable landmark.
Cons
  • $350B is the highest price tag on the entire list — more than the GDP of most nations.
  • The Golden Gate's currents are among the most violent tidal flows on Earth; construction would be extraordinarily dangerous.
  • 4.5 million tons of titanium-steel composite has no existing production pathway.
Feasibility: The least feasible project here. The currents, the depth, the seismicity, the materials, and the cost compound into something beyond current engineering. The Thames Barrier and Delta Works were built in forgiving estuaries; the Golden Gate is arguably the hardest strait on the planet to dam. Visionary in the literal sense — a vision, not a plan.
Aerial mock-up: The iconic red bridge untouched above; beneath it, a hyper-modern metallic barrier of titanium-steel gates anchored in massive concrete blocks.
