Cost breakdown (proposal-scale estimates — see math)
⚠️ All figures below are parametric estimates scaled from the proposal's own budget ($8.5T ÷ 17,000 mi ≈ $500M per mile), not engineering quotes. Methodology is shown so you can check the math.
| Item | Basis | Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal construction | Large-city terminal (parametric range $2-4B) | $3B |
| Land acquisition | Regional factor 1.5× on $200M base | $300M |
| Track: St. Louis → Springfield | 85.1 mi × $500M/mi | $42.55B |
| Annual operations (share) | Staffing, power, maintenance | $60M/yr |
| Stop total (excl. annual ops) | $45.85B |
Best terminal location (proposed)
The Gateway Transportation Center / Union Station district. The Gateway Transportation Center already hosts Amtrak and intercity buses beside the landmark Union Station hotel complex. MetroLink light rail stops at Union Station, and the surrounding rail yard and parking lots provide downtown build room with direct freeway access.
Before / after

Aerial mock-up (illustrative, not an engineering rendering). Left: the proposed site today. Right: with the maglev terminal.
🛤️ Infill stops toward Springfield: the proposal envisions more stops than cities — smaller stations between majors. Plausible infills on this leg:
← All 287 stops
- Alton, IL - Mississippi riverfront city north of St. Louis
- Carlinville, IL - Macoupin County seat on the corridor
- Litchfield, IL - I-55 town midway to Springfield
