Minnesota
is building.

A ≈$2.86 billion light-rail extension in testing for a June 2027 opening, a $377 million rebuild of the I-494/I-35W corridor, and a $263 million expansion of MSP's Terminal 2 headline Minnesota's public pipeline — with MnDOT majors from Blaine to Mankato behind them.

*How to read the total: the sum of the published figures in the list below. Bases differ by project — most are total cost estimates, some are federal grants, program totals, or construction contracts as awarded. Each project's expanded view labels its own basis. We add them up with the labels showing rather than pretend they're all the same kind of number.

Where they are

Coverage note — read this before quoting the tally

16 major public projects: 9 in the Twin Cities metro (Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington/Edina, Blaine, Eagan/Apple Valley and the airport), plus Mankato, Jordan, Carver County, Wright County, Moorhead and the Mississippi River locks. The listed figures sum to ≈$4.7B, and one project — the ≈$2.86B Green Line Extension — is nearly two-thirds of the tally on its own. Bi-state pointers (listed once elsewhere, never duplicated here): the Blatnik Bridge replacement between Duluth and Superior stands on the Wisconsin page at its full published ≈$1.815B total, with Minnesota's ≈$400M share disclosed there — it is not listed again here. The Fargo–Moorhead (FM) Area Diversion is listed on North Dakota's page (the Metro Flood Diversion Authority is North Dakota-based and most construction is in North Dakota); Moorhead's Minnesota-side channels and control structures are part of that single record, not a second Minnesota row. Minnesota's inventory is majors-led: funded MnDOT, airport, university and county work in the $10M–$60M band exists across the state but is not itemised beyond the sourced majors listed here.

How the figures are counted: MnDOT corridor totals are the department's own 2026 metro construction table totals (not single-season spend — the table's season column is disclosed on the Highway 77 bridge record, where only $1.5M of $51.698M falls in 2026). At MSP only the funded $263M Terminal 2 expansion and the programmed $300M Terminal 1 tram replacement are tallied; the wider $1.9B 2026–28 capital programme is not. The BCA Mankato office is listed at its $67M bonding appropriation and labelled committed funding, not a final cost. The Lock and Dam 2 & 3 record is the awarded $12.8M contract covering two sites, pinned at Welch. No suspended major was verified in this cycle.

News-flagged sources: six rows rest on news or trade-press reporting of official figures, flagged 'news-flagged' in the data — the Green Line Extension opening date and $2.86B Legislative Auditor figure (Pioneer Press), the MSP Terminal 2 expansion (Construction Dive, from MAC), the Highway 212 completion (Construction Equipment Guide), the Jordan interchange (Hub News), the BCA appropriation (Finance & Commerce) and the Southdale approvals context (Finance & Commerce via the county record). Each record names the underlying official source. The softest records on the page are the MSP tram replacement (a programmed capital-program amount, not a contract) and the Jordan interchange total (a reported scope figure above an earlier narrower application) — both are labelled as such on their records.

Deliberately excluded: projects completed in a prior year, however large — the Twin Ports Interchange in Duluth ($435M, opened October 6, 2025), the University of Minnesota's Fraser Hall Chemistry Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories ($144.7M, opened October 2025) and MSP's $242M Terminal 1 improvement project (completed December 2025). Excluded as unfunded: the METRO Blue Line Extension to Brooklyn Park (≈$3.58B at 90% design in 2026, with a ≈$224M local funding gap reported in September 2026 and no federal Full Funding Grant Agreement secured) and the Minnesota State University Mankato Armstrong Hall replacement ($96.9M bonding requested, not appropriated). Also excluded as private, however large: Essentia Health and Mayo Clinic builds (private nonprofit), data centres and private development.
